Day of Silence + Flag Raising on 4/11

Two events are commemorated at the same time on April 11, 2025:

The Day of Silence is an annual day of action organized by GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network) to spread awareness about the effects of the bullying and harassment of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQ) students. In the United States, students take a day-long vow of silence to symbolically represent the silencing of LGBTQ students. Since 1996 the Day of Silence has been held each year on the second Friday of April. It has since expanded into workplaces, university campuses, and sporting events.

Ten years ago the Southold Unitarian Church burned to the ground. Along with the building, the flags that flew with the church also burned — one of them was the Pride flag.

On Friday, April 11 at 5 pm a new Pride flag will be raised in a ceremony with local high schoolers and youth to commemorate the end to their Day of Silence.

We would love the North Fork Women community to attend the ceremony and show their support.

Thank you Bernie Hoban for donating the Pride Flag to the church.
