Pucky (Ellen McCarter) Violett died peacefully at her home on February 13, 2020 at age 94. Her partner and spouse of 45 years was artist Tommy Thomas, who predeceased her at age 96 in 2016. Pucky was an unstinting, free hearted and unqualified supporter of NFWFWF since its inception in 1992.

Pucky’s career as a writer began at age 17 when she published her first short story, “Stand In” in Harper’s Bazaar. Her career as a television dramatist spanned four decades. Her adaptions and original dramas include “ The Lottery,” episodes of “The Defenders,” “Go Ask Alice” and “Big Blonde” for the PBS Great Performance series. She was the author of the well-received novel, Double Talk.

Pucky, with Tommy, was a committed and generous philanthropist, consistently supporting women’s causes, the literary and performing arts, the freedom of expression
and human rights. Pucky’s commitment to the elemental right of each and every individual to be, and to realize themselves, cannot be overstated. Her life, individually and with Tommy, was one of quiet and consistent advocacy for equality and freedom. Fabulously and glamorously out, Pucky and Tommy served as an example to us all.

At each and every NFWFWF Labor Day event, without fail they always sat right up front, together generously making winning bids on item after item. In addition, Tommy would contribute one of her magnificent, renowned wooden sculptures to the event. Upon Tommy’s death, on behalf of both of them, Pucky donated $100,000 To NFWFWF.

Pucky was a model of grace, courage, generosity and wisdom.
